The Type VIIC was the largest series of German submarines built during the Second World War, whose production started in 1940 and lasted until the end of the war. Upgraded from previous versions of the Type VII, the C version incorporated a new sonar, a faster immersion system, new electric motors and improved air compressors. In 1944 some units began to be supplied with snorkel.

During the second half of the war some units were armed with multiple 20-millimeter antiaircraft cannons installed in single, twin or even quadruple mountings). The electronic equipment included the Such-Gerat active sonar, discontinued from 1941, the FuMO 29/30 radar, installed from 1942/43 onwards, and the FuMO 61 "Hohentwiel" U radar, installed in a part of the units produced.

The C/41 variant had a pressure hull of thicker walls to allow for an increased immersion depth; the increased displacement was compensated with the adoption of lighter batteries. The C/42 variant was intended for a further increased immersion depth (at the expenses of even thicker hull walls), additional fuel capacity (at the expenses of a larger hull) and increased speed; however, this project was eventually cancelled in favor of the new Type XXI.
